Library to Host Go Figure! Traveling Exhibit

Storybooks present enjoyable, meaningful, interactive math explorations to children and adults in Go Figure! – a national traveling exhibit that will be at the downtown Rapid City Public Library during the month of March.

The hands-on exhibit transforms charming children’s books into a kid-sized world where children and adults can have fun exploring math with familiar characters such as Arthur, Frog and Toad, and the Three Bears. Each of the five colorful larger-than-life books in the exhibit includes a math-related activity such as measuring, weighing, or sorting, along with labels to guide parents. Featured books are Arthur’s Pet Business, The Doorbell Rang, The Quilt, Frog and Toad are Friends: A Lost Button, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

“Using familiar children’s books, the exhibit offers our community delightful experiences with simple math and demonstrates that math is learned naturally by the inventive, curious mind. Children ages two to seven years old and their parents or caregivers will enjoy the lively graphics of the exhibit and the related programs and activities,” said Susan Braunstein, programming library associate.

Teens are invited to tune in and use their creativity to win big at the library during Teen Tech Week March 7-13, 2010. To celebrate this year’s theme, "Learn Create Share @ Your Library,” the Rapid City Public Library is hosting a YouTube Film contest with prizes including a digital camera with filming capabilities, an MP3 player and a $50 Best Buy gift certificate.

The week’s activities kick-off on Friday, March 5 with a YouTube and Video Production workshop. Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to learn how to make a film and burn it to CD, as well as how to make a movie using creative commons and public domain elements found on the internet. The workshop will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the downtown library and 1 to 2:30 at the north library.

Teens, whether at the workshop or not, have until March 10 to submit a 5 minute or shorter film in one of two categories: “Learn, Create, Share @ Your Library,” or create your own book trailer. The top three finishers in both categories will receive prizes. Rules for the contest and entry forms can be found online at www.rapidcitylibrary.org/teentechweek.

Teen Tech Week will end in style with a star-studded premiere on Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the downtown library. At the Teen Tech Week Film Premiere all entries will be featured and prizes for the top three winners in each category will be awarded. Food and refreshments will be a part of the festivities and the public is invited.

Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those that are offered through libraries. Teen Tech Week encourages teens to use libraries' non-print resources for education and recreation, and to recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals in the field of information technology. Teen Tech Week is held annually the second week of March.

Story Time Punch Cards Coming in March

Who would believe that story times spent being read to, singing songs, and watching puppet shows could get more exciting, but the Rapid City Public Library has done just that. Now children can earn free books while having fun at story times.

Starting in March, each child that attends story times will receive a punch card. At every story time the child attends he or she will get their card punched by the storyteller. Once the child has attended 10 story times he or she can turn it in and pick out a free book. For every card a child fills, he or she will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize to be given away at the end of the year!

“We are very excited that this promotion not only encourages children to participate in story times, but all so gives them books to read at home,” said storyteller Leanna Bussell. “It is never too early for children to attend story time or be read to. Even babies are drawn to pictures in books and children of all ages learn about colors, sounds and shapes through stories. People of all ages will enjoy the many ways we tell stories from songs to puppets to flannel boards.”

Weekly Story Times are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the library. Book Buddies Story Time geared towards preschoolers is every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and Baby Bookworms Story Time geared towards babies and toddlers is every Thursday at 9:30 and 10 a.m. Both Story Times are at the Downtown Library. During the summer an additional story time is held each week at the North Library.

In addition to Weekly Story Time, the library hosts Family Story Times twice a month. People young and old, from babies to grandparents, are invited to join the Story Time librarians for stories, music and fun topped off with pizza. Family Story Times take place the second Tuesday of every month at the Downtown Library and the third Tuesday of every month at the North Library located in General Beadle Elementary.
